- More Than Just A Rehab Center

Genesis does not offer rehabilitation
programs, it has partnered with organizations that offer outpatient drug
treatments. To remain in the Genesis program, residents with drug
or alcohol abuse problems should attend their programs and get involved
in Genesis' workshops that involve Bible study, conflict resolution, etc.
Genesis Transitional Housing Ministries,
Inc. (Genesis, Inc.) proposes to provide guidance and supportive services
to facilitate the re-entry of ex-offenders into the community, address
recidivism rates and offer these individuals an opportunity to become self-sufficient
and successful within New York City. We believe it is essential to support
a positive, redirection to ex-offenders towards becoming a productive addition
to their community.
With years of experience, Genesis,
Inc. has continued to refine and adapt its treatment approach to working
with the ex-offender population. We remain cognizant of the many pitfalls,
both legal and professional, which inevitably arise in serving an ex-offender/
homeless residents.
During the first 30 days in the program,
the resident should work on his or her service plans - a list of personal
goals - with a counselor.
Genesis’ program objectives are as
follows:
1) To provide educational resources and health awareness platforms.
2) To initiate and facilitate various programs to help build skills and
knowledge to enable clientele to integrate successfully into the community.
3) To engage in a positive mentoring program that models exemplary lifestyles
shared through strong mentoring staff members, and volunteers.
4) To teach value-based principles to develop and enhance trusting personal
relationships.
5) To utilize volunteers from professional fields of business displaying
and encouraging positive values and direction.
6) To utilize established affiliates in assisting and facilitating job
placement within the community for clientele.
"The spiritual component is very
unique. Other programs many times are not treated spiritually.
We believe that the Holy Spirit will help them to become whole again.
Residents can stay in the program
as long as nine months to a year, but those ready to leave earlier are
welcome to do so. However if more time is needed to secure permanent housing,
the resident will meet with a case manager to discuss possible extension
of stay. Samuel Cruz, one of the first graduates of the program and the
Broady's personal pride, left Genesis after only three months. A
former convict, Cruz, 47, arrived at Genesis after a few days in a shelter.
"I preferred to go back to prison if I had to stay there," Cruz said of
the shelter. After getting a job, and trying to adjust to his new
life after 16 years in prison, Cruz is now trying to build his own construction
company. |
